Exams! Exams!

“Tell me why, ain’t nothin’ but a heartache…Tell me why…”

The BSB’s music was turned on full blast, banging throughout the bedroom of Amber. Amber and her gang of friends Ika, Jacq, Sheyne and Dana were sitting on the huge Queen-sized bed laying their schoolbooks on it, burying their heads in them.

They were all studying Quantum Physics, and essential and compulsory subject in their course they’re taking: Elated Science. The fact was in their college—Cybernet College—only science ruled. It was the first and only college that only uses science and no other in their courses. There was Home Science, Mechanical Science, Food Science and a lot more. Elated Science was what Amber and the gang took, and mind you, it was a course worth eye-bulging.

Not all of the gang liked this course. Ika chose it purely for the love of science, almost. Jacq chose it to please her mother who had high hopes for her to be a scientist like her late father. She would rather take Home Science but she knew her mother wouldn’t approve to it. Amber chose it for the same reason Ika chose it. Sheyne chose it ‘coz she hated it much less than other subjects and courses. Dana chose it just to experience something challenging. Well, she got what she wanted.

GROWL~~~~!!! Everyone turned to Sheyne. Sheyne grinned. Among all the hungry people in the gang, Sheyne’s stomach growl was the loudest. Mid-term exams often forced them to eat less to save time for study. So when their stomachs start to growl in hunger, Sheyne’s stomach always acted as the ‘alarm clock’ to remind them to have their meals. Jacq got up without a word and headed towards the kitchen.

“Hey, Jacq,” Amber called from her room. “You don’t have to cook. Just rummage anything from the fridge. I’m sure there’s still some leftover cake in there!” They all lived under one condominium nearby the college, so they know every nook and cranny of their own residence. Even Dana could find her piece of eraser amidst her terrible room.

Jacq ignored her call, which was expected by the gang. They remembered Jacq’s principle about proper meals. She often said that it’s unhealthy to eat simply something out of the fridge, so they weren’t surprised when the kitchen began to spread out the sweet aroma of lunch. When Jacq hollered for them, they gratefully threw their thick Quantum Physics books away and ran down to the dining room.

It was a fine spread. Jacq was brought up once in Britain by her uncle when her mother disappeared for 3 years due to the death of her father, so her cooking was no different than a British lunch. Everyone tucked in hungrily. There was nothing much left when they were all done.

“Too bad you didn’t enter Home Science,” Amber said face to face with Jacq. Jacq just smiled. She was a special person and she didn’t talk much. She was deaf and couldn’t hear a thing ever since she recovered from high fever when she was 3. But she was very good in lip-reading and she acted so casually that nobody noticed that she was handicapped. Only the gang knew about her lil’ problem, and so did Aaron and his gang. They were best friends with Amber and the gang, not to mention Aaron, Indra, Yasir and Micheal were equally Ika, Amber, Dana and Jacq’s boyfriends. There was also Tan Hui Min and Gilbert in Aaron’s gang, but they have no strings attached with Sheyne or the others. Sheyne didn’t believe in love and wouldn’t even mention about it. To her, career comes first.

“Yeah, Jacq!” Ika agreed, patting Jacq’s shoulder to get her attention. “It’s such a pity! You don’t even need to take mid-term exams, that’s what I’ve heard. You just have to get ready an assignment on cookery and that’s it.”

“No wonder I never see any Home Science students reading any books,” Dana said, astonished. “I saw them spend most of the time in the cookery room. Cool!”

“It’s OK, I can handle it,” Jacq said briefly and smiled again. They all really loved her smile that made her eyes closed into slits. They found it very interesting indeed.

After cleaning and drying the dishes together, they went back to Amber’s bedroom to study. All of them were silent, burying their hands into the Quantum Physics books and looked up once in a while to discuss questions that they didn’t know. The hi-fi was still playing BSB’s next song.

“I don’t care who you are, where you’re from, what you did, as long as you love me…”

--:--

“Fed up! Fed up! I’m FED UP!!”

Yasir’s frustrated voice echoed down the silent library. The librarian droned a very long ‘shush’ to remind him where he was. Yasir scowled at her but did not complain.

“Calm down, Yasir,” Tan Hui Min said, patting Yasir’s shoulder. “It’s not that bad once you get the hang of it.”

“Easy for you to say! You and Micheal are taking Home Science, while we are taking Mechanical Science! You think you can get the hang of it? No siree! You try burying yourself in books 24/7!”

“Chill, Yas, it’s not the end of the world.” It was Aaron’s turn to speak “It’s just a mid-term exam, like any other exams we’ve been through. It’s really not so bad.”

“You say so ‘coz you’re smart! You always score top marks in exams and assignments. My marks are only half of yours. I’ll never have the guts to face Dana if I don’t score better than my last exam.”

“Both of you are betting again, eh?” Gilbert grinned, looking up from his Modern Electronics text book. Yasir nodded. He remembered his tiny, sun-browned gal challenged him to score as much and as high marks as Aaron’s in the mid-term exam and if he wins the bet, she will be his eternal slave during the Cybernet Dance Night, and vice versa. Egoistic as he was, he would never lose his manly attitude to a bet like that but deep down inside him, he regretted ever accepting his girlfriend’s idea.

“You’ll pull through, don’t worry,” Micheal said, fixing his red cap that high-lighted his blonde hair. “My gal hated Elated Science but she took it anyway. And she’s doing fine.”

“That’s b’coz she’s pretending to like to please her dear ol’ Mummykins,” Yasir snorted, reopening his text book. “Doesn’t her mother ever care about what she wants?”

“Not a bit, as far as I know,” Tan replied, flipping through a cookbook that was stacked on top of his scrap book papers. He was Jacq’s neighbour and closest friend and he was the on to introduce her to Micheal. “I heard her father died in a freak accident when he was doing a science project. He must have told something to Jacq’s mom before he died that made her insist Jacq to pursue in the same science field as her pop.”

“Geez! She’s a nutcase!” Aaron complained. He did not like the idea of parents forcing their children to do something they didn’t like just because the parents weren’t able to fulfill it when they were young. He pitied Jacq for being on of the many victims with parents of high expectations.

“Let’s not talk about Jacq’s mom,” Micheal said, changing the subject that might hurt her girlfriend’s feelings. “About the Cybernet Dance Night, got any dates? I mean, besides Yasir, Aaron, Indra and I?”

The singles Gilbert and Tan Hui Min looked at each other, speechless. They have nobody in mind and even if they wanted to take Sheyne as a blind date, Sheyne would definitely say no. They looked at the gang and shrugged, “Dunno. Someone might come along.”

It was an answer full of doubt, even for Tan and Gilbert.

‘MID-TERM EXAMS: 5 MORE DAYS TO GO’

The warning reminder written on the white board caused the students of Elated Science Course to crease their faces into a thousand tension wrinkles. In their minds, they really would like to just slaughter the culprit who changed the number of days on the board. Amber and the gang were some of them.

“Dang that somebody! Do they have to be so nosy about the days? They give me the jitters!” Dana complained as she flopped her books onto her side of the long table and made way for the gang to go in.

“I wonder how Aaron and the others are doing,” Jacq said as she scratched her ear. She didn’t believe in hearing-aids and would not even be tempted to buy them, not even if it’s the end of the world.

“Definitely wracking their brains out, except Micheal and Tan,” Amber replied, making sure she was face to face with Jacq to let her ‘hear’ her. “They just need to prepare an assignment, and that’s that.”

“What luck for the Home Science students. If it weren’t for your ma, you’d be running with joy,” Sheyne said outspokenly. She was honest and straightforward which both made the gang quite irritated yet respect her a lot.

It ached Jacq’s heart when she ‘heard’ her words, but she kept silent as if she didn’t ‘hear’ it at all. Amber scowled and nudged Sheyne. Ika shot Sheyne a ‘You dope’ look and shoved her towards Jacq. Sheyne patted Jacq apologetically and said, “Hey, sorry. No hard feelings, huh?”

Jacq shook her head and quickly sat down when she saw the lecturer coming into class, signaling them to sit down as well. They got the cue and plopped their butts onto their seats. The class began as usual; the lecturer reminding them about the exam and started pouring lectures of revision through the Science text.

Meanwhile, Tan Hui Min and Micheal were at the Cookery Room trying out their new recipes that can be able to prove their cookbook assignment. They heaved a sigh of pity when they remembered Yasir complaining about the horrors of exams and the gang studying their brains out to pass the test. They felt thankful for being able to escape the jaws of exam hell and ‘goyang kaki’ throughout the exam period.

“Oh! Dang, I burnt the toast again!” Tan exclaimed irritatedly, plucking the burnt toast out of the toaster and flinging the hot charcoaled bread onto the tray. He groaned as the toast began to omit its worst burnt smell ever. Micheal chuckled at that sight.

“This is the 10th toast you’ve burnt! If you don’t get ready that serving soon before this evening’s deadline, you’re in for trouble!” Micheal grinned as he looked at Tan poured the ‘failed experiment’ into the trash can. “By the way, what’s your menu anyway?”

“It’s called ‘Deli Rainbow La Toast Sandwich’. You put all kinds of fruits and vegetables and shower them with thick mayonnaise in a salad bowl, mix them altogether and put them on the toast made into sandwiches and coat the toast sandwich with a little condensed milk. My favourite snack!”

“Wow! Simple and nice! Not bad! But next time, try to adjust the toaster temperature before making your toast.”

“What about you? I kinda forgot,” Tan asked, doing exactly what Micheal advised before attempting to toast his bread.

“Just a simple sweet snack. ‘Apple Collie Biscuit’ is the name. You make some apple sauce and cut a few apples into small dices, then bake some pancake flips until they are crispy brown. Later you put the diced apples onto the pancake flip and pour some apple sauce over it, wrap it up carefully and smother more apple sauce on the pancake flip, like gravy.”

“Did you say apple sauce?” Tan asked in a weird tone.

“Yup, why?”

“Is that your apple sauce?” he asked again, pointing at the pot on the stove with the contents boiling and churning out of it, making the stove hiss as the spoilt sauce hit it. Micheal yelled in horror and ran to turn off the stove. Tan snorted, trying not to laugh as Micheal mourned over his moulded apple sauce.

A few hours left before the clock strikes at midnight, signaling the beginning of the exam day. Everyone decided to turn in early but secretly, in their rooms, they turned on their table lights, laid their books on the table and began studying. They often agreed on group study and revision together but sometimes, they needed the time of their own.

Ika was doing well in her side of studying. Her fingers worked very fast on the scientific calculator and her pencil scribbled furiously on her foolscap papers. No question was too hard for her. She enjoyed challenging questions and liked to ‘exercise’ her brain trying to find creative solutions with astounding and satisfying results. She thought of hunting answers, planning strategies, diagrams and plots and concentrating the main objectives to the questions was an adventure worth looking for. Challenges like tat can never make her bored and keeps her occupied and away from sleep. When the clock struck midnight, she finally drew away from her educational fantasy in reluctance and headed for bed.

Amber, on the other hand, had her huge, thick revision book on the left side of the table and a short-hand note book on the right. She jotted down furiously on the note book; her hand constantly turning to the left to find the main important points that she highlighted, and at the same time, she tried to read and understand what she was writing. She knew she had a very short memory span and could easily doze off when she starts to settle her eyes into the thick books she dreaded reading, so she jotted them all in her note books so that she can carry them wherever she goes and read them whenever she liked. She tried to make interesting quotations and fancy rhymes to let her remember the formulas she was jotting and she often laughed just looking at them. When the beepings of her digital watch signaled her that it was midnight, she thankfully turned off her table light and crawled to bed.

In the meantime, Jacq was beginning to wander and ponder. She tried to remember all that she had learnt throughout the mid-term. She visualized the lecturer’s way of movements of his mouth as he went through Quantum Physics, Add Chemistry, Prime Biology and Maths. Then her mother’s face came across her mind. Her face showing how high her hopes are for her and her showing her late father’s picture as she said, “Jacqie, you’re my only one. Make your Papa proud. Continue what he had missed.” She then sighed. What was the point of going on with this course if she had no interest in it? Sure, she does have a little bit of passion for science like her father but she never wanted to be serious in it. Even her late father told her to pursue what she thought she liked best and he won’t force her to choose his field, but why her Ma? Whatever happened to her during her 3 year disappearance after her father’s death? She wanted to take Home Science not just because Micheal was in it, but also because she loves the course itself. Why won’t her Ma let her? When her clock chimed twelve, she went to bed with the same questions in her mind.

Meanwhile Sheyne was glueing her eyes to the Quantum Physics tezt book, highlighting the main points as she read through. She heaved a sigh of exhaustion as she massaged her temple. She hated Science and, mind you, hated it for all its worth. And yet she often scored high marks for that subject throughout her schooling years, which surprised the gang very much. In secret, she had a reason that only Jacq knew about her commitment into the Science field. Slowly she fished out a picture of a young man no older than U-student. He had black ebony hair and tanned skin and was smiling in his graduation clothes. She stroked the picture lovingly and kissed it, saying, “The time will come, Razul, time will come.” When she noticed both hands of her watch pointing at the number 12, she slipped the picture back under the mattress and went to bed.

Dana, on the other line, was checking her e-mail to see if there were any new messages sent in. when she saw none she started to send e-mails herself, clicking with joy on the keyboards of the computer. She had a passion for these mechanisms and wouldn’t hesitate to find out new things about it. Like I said, she enjoyed challenges. But she didn’t find Elated Science challenging enough, and not even Mechanical Science for that matter, because she had went through Yasir’s text books and got the hang of it within a few days. Unknown to Amber and the gang, Dana was a child prodigy. She only had to pay entire attention to the class and and revise the lesson she had leanrt only once and that’s it: she had it all in her head. But at the same time she was a party animal, which made her prodigy talent invisible to the gang. She chuckled to herself when she remembered her bet and be treated like a Queen. When she saw the timer on the computer showing 12:00 AM, she turned off the computer and went to bed.

When the girls were enjoying their beauty sleep, the boys on their side of the condo were still wide awake. They were all burying their heads into their books and had no time to rest. Aaron was doing equally well as Ika did; of course, they’re couples! He occasionally scratched his head a few times when he came across some tricky questions but solved them in a jiffy. Indra had his walkman on while he read his notes and formulas. He could do nothing without music, even studying. He claimed that music helps him concentrate even better during studies. Even when the lecturer was teaching, he kept one side of the earphone in either side of his ear as he sat for the class, music like ‘Crawlin’, ‘Rollin’, ‘Last Resort’ and ‘Follow Me’ banging at his eardrum.

Yasir was having a hard time. A big flask of coffee was on his table as he scavenged the etxt books and revision books, trying to fit as much info as possible into his head. He vowed to himself that he would not lose the bet to his precious ‘gem’ Dana for he wanted to be the Man just this once at the Cybernet Dance Night. When he began to droop, he immediately took a long sip of coffee. Every time he felt like stopping and throwing away the books, he imagined Dana in her best outfit for her Dance Night and the thought of her following his every needs and orders only, made him alive again. Gilbert was at a so-so pace in his studying. Not too good but not too bad either. His mind couldn’t help wondering about the Dance Night and about how he and Tan Hui Min are going to get themselves a date—even a blind date would do—to enjoy the Dance Night. He couldn’t help thinking that Sheyne could be available but had no high hopes for that. He then shrugged off the idea and went on with his studying.

Tan Hui Min and Micheal had already done their assignments and handed them out to the lecturer together with their servings. They were now enjoying themselves watching a spooky midnight movie on HBO, eating popcorn and drinking soda as they savoured every gory scene of the movie.

Exam day.

The whole lecture room was quiet; so quiet you could hear a sewing pin drop. The only sounds that could be heard were the flipping of papers, clicking of calculators and scribbling of pencils. The examiner was sitting at the front table clicking quietly at his laptop, turning off the sound box. All the students in front of him buried their heads into the white exam papers, scribbling anything that comes in mind. Amber and the gang were not left out.

Ika answered her questions smooth and straight. She had no difficulty trying to answer a Quantum Physics question or crack a Math problem. Even Add Chemistry and Prime Biology was just a synch. Once in a while she came across some questions which were quite tricky, but after a few moments of re-reading and remembering her notes, she easily saw the light. Amber had quite a hard time finding the answers. She tried to remember all the notes she had copied and remember the quotations and rhymes she created. When she chuckled a little at the funny rhymes she wrote, then she was able to answer the questions. Sheyne had a scent of hatred as she saw the question papers laid in front of her and really wanted to just tear the papers into pieces and storm out of the lecture room, but when she looked at the young man Razul in the picture, she calmed down a bit and began answering as best as she could, holding the picture close to her chest.

Jacq also had not much of a problem. She spent most of her time trying to visualize the lecturer’s mouth movements. When she remembered how the answer is revealed through his mouth, she immediately wrote it down in her answer sheet, double-checking to see if she had got it wrong or not. Dana was the most leisured person. She had it all in her head, so in no time, she finished all her papers 30 minutes before time’s up and as soon as she finished, she began reading her comic books. But once in a while, she kept a watchful eye over the examiner just to make sure he didn’t notice her reading the comic and taking it away for that comic was her precious, given by her Yasir.

In the meantime, the boys were in the lecture room doing their side of the exam. Aaron was answering the question like eating candy, just as the exact situation as Ika. Indra was having his walkman as usual as he answered his questions. He had it hidden inside his overall with the earphones out of his collar and into his ear. His head swayed to the beat of sentimental music and nodded to the rhythm of rock and pop songs, and his hand was scribbling on his answer sheets, gliding straight and smooth as if the answers were all broadcasted into his brain through the walkman. If anyone saw him without knowing that he was actually listening to music, they might think he was cheating, especially the examiner.

Yasir was the most stressed out student among the gang. When he forgot a formula or a note he read that was connected to the question, he scratched his head like anything. Even Gilbert who was sitting beside him was taken aback by Yasir’s sudden reaction to his exam papers. At his final two questions, Yasir’s head began spinning round and round like a roller coaster. He took a few gulps of water from his flask but it did nothing to regain his composure. He tried to focus on the eternal pleasure he will get at the Dance Night if he won the bet but they all toppled down like cards blown in the wind. His throat felt as if it was strangled hard and his eyes saw spider webs instead of the questions. His body felt cold all over and he could not grip his pen properly. He heard Gilbert calling him but it gradually became softer and softer.

Later, he could feel nothing more.

--:--

“Is he OK?”

“I hope so.”

“I’ll never forgive myself if anything happens to…”

“Hush! He’s coming round!”

When Yasir finally opened his eyes, he saw 10 relieved faces looking down at him, smiling from ear to ear. Dana suddenly burst into terars and hugged Yasir, “Waa~~!! Yas~~!! I’m sorry, Yas, I’m sorry~~! I shouldn’t have made that silly bet! I put to much pressure on you~~!! Waa~~!!!”

Yasir was speechless. That was the first time he saw Dana cry. Throughout his relationship with Dana since Form 3, he always saw her as a jovial, fun-loving person. Her smile always hung on her face and she only had a kiddy frown when she was annoyed. Yasir smiled and wrapped his arms around her. It was a touching moment. Nobody said a word. Their actions described everything.

After a brief moment of silence, Sheyne walked out of the crowd. Jacq saw her and followed suite. Sheyne looked down from the glass wall of the sick room, the picture of Razul still in her hand. Jacq walked close to her and said, “Thinking about Razul?”

As if expected her presence, Sheyne nodded and replied, “Yup. That’s what I’m here for.”

“You sure you can score? I mean you hate this subject and…”

“I know. But I’m not going to run away. I must find out the truth.”

“About Razul’s death?”

“Yes. He was with your father at the expedition, and he died together with your father during the freak accident. When I wanted to find out what happened and what the cause was, they refused to say more. I suspected something fishy going on and since then, I swore to myself that I will find out the truth, no matter at what cost, even if it means facing the subject I hate; ‘coz this is the only way to get closer to the truth. That’s why you’re hanging on to this subject too, right?”

“Yeah,” Jacq nodded. “I just want to know what did he tell my Ma that made her insist on taking Science. I just wanna know, that’s all. I guess we’ll never find out unless we hang on, huh?”

“Yeah. Razul was my only brother and he was my everything. I will not give up until I see the light.”

“So, see ya at the Science field then.”

“Yup, see ya.”

A kaleidoscope of coloured lights dazzled the hall during the Cybernet Dance Night. The hall was filled with people young and old, from junior students to the lecturers. Everyone was having a good time, either enjoying the gourmet laid on the dining table or just chit-chatting away while waiting for the pro-DJ to come and start the Dance Night. His assistant DJ was in charge, playing some music to pass the time.

Aaron and the gang together with Ika and the gang were among the 350 guests in the hall. All of them were wearing almost formal clothes, except Sheyne. She insisted on wearing wearing jeans and a rugged T-shirt, which suited her tomboyish look. The gang was in pairs: Aaron and Ika, Jacq and Micheal, Indra and Amber and Dana and Yasir. They all looked quite gorgeous in their formal wear like special dance gowns, ball gowns and dresses for the girls and tux and dinner wear for the boys. Only the singles Gilbert and Tan Hui Min leaned on the dining table drinking ginger beer out of their plastic cups. When the pro-DJ came, everyone hollered and cheered, clapping their hands to welcome him. He bowed comically and started winding up the first CD, playing the song ‘Drive Me Crazy’ by Britney Spears. Everyone got up to the dancing beat and began to swing. Only the poor kiddies who were plain single or had no dates or friends to dance with stayed at the corner and watched. Tan and Gilbert were the two of them.

“Hey, guys! Wanna dance?” They were startled by Sheyne’s voice. They turned and saw Sheyne standing beside them, her body moving to the beat.

“I thought you don’t wanna have a guy with you!” Gilbert exclaimed, trying to outmatch the banging music.

“Yeah! I thought you’re going solo!” Tan agreed.

“Geez! You are such a loser!” Sheyne snorted. “Even if I’m what I am, doesn’t mean that I don’t need a friend to have fun with! Just b’coz I’m a tomboy, I’m anti to guys? Puleez!! Now, come on! Join the fun! You could have both asked me to be your blind date.”

At these last words, the boys felt like a stone just knocked their heads: HARD. They’ve been trying not to ask Sheyne to the dance as a blind date but Sheyne actually want to be their blind date. Sheyne, with an outgoing manner, dragged them to the center of the hall and started dancing, encouraging the boys to move to the beat and keep up with her. The rest of the gang saw them, oohed a little and danced closer to the trio. Slowly they became the center of attention as they partied their way throughout the Dance Night.

--:--

Everyone gathered at the Bulletin Board, whispering and praying for their dear lives. The gang arrived a few moments later. The great piece of pink manila card filled with numbers written in black would determine who will have to repeat their semester and who will continue into the next semester. Aaron and Ika cheered as they saw their numbers 4665 and 4675 written on the manila card. Dana clapped herself on the back when she saw, as expected, her number 4673 on the list. Micheal and Tan Hui Min didn’t have to look because their course goes straight down until the final semester without having to take mid-term exams. Jacq and Sheyne punched each other lightly on the each other’s shoulder when they finally found their numbers 4676 and 4677 written in bold. Amber squealed in delight and relief when the number 4674 that she thought she could never find written just right above Ika’s number. Indra congratulated her giving her a kiss. When Amber saw his number 4664 right below Gilbert’s number 4663, she returned his kiss. Gilbert blushed and looked away for he was quite sensitive about mushy stuff.

Seeing the gang being congratulated by each other, especially the couples Aaron/Ika and Jacq/Micheal including Amber/Indra, Yasir’s heart skipped a beat. Gilbert told him at the sick room that day that he blacked out in the middle of the last paper and he had to re-sit for the paper again. He gave his best shot although Dana had told him that the bet was off. They didn’t enslave each other during the Dance night but he couldn’t help noticing that Dana had shown him a lot of care. if he didn’t score it right, he felt like he had let Dana down. While Dana was busy congratulating the gang, he surveyed the whole list.

“4663, 4664…” Yasir read to himself, hoping his number would come out of the blue, “4665, 4666, 4667…4667? 4667! Yes!! That’s it! That’s my number!!! Wohoo!! I’m in! I’m in for the next semester~~!! YEEHAA~~!!!”

At hearing Yasir’s happy yell, Dana could guess that her precious had finally made it through. Without warning, she hugged Yasir tight and kissed him dearly without heeding those beady eyes that watched them with a mixture of wonder, envy, embarrassment and disgust.

“Yeah, baby! That’s the spirit!” Micheal teased and everyone laughed heartily. After a moment of passion, the gang dispersed from the big crowd who were still searching for their numbers on the board.

“Hey, guys,” Aaron said, after making sure they’re way behind the crowd. “Holidays are coming soon, since the exam has finally ended. Everyone’s gonna go for a little vacation. Where shall we go?”

“Yeah, I haven’t thought of that!” Gilbert replied, lit up. “Any suggestions? For starters?”

“Let’s go to the place where even the old puny college masters won’t even dare set foot in,” Micheal said wickedly. “Only guys like us go and I guarantee that if you bring a lecturer in, he/she will soon yowl in fright and run off like a mad dog.”

“You don’t mean…?” Jacq was about to feel the excitement.

“Yup! That’s the place alright,” Tan replied, getting the cue.

Right at the crack of midnight, signifying the first day of the holidays, the gang dressed themselves to the nines and went straight to the Discotechque.

A Wish Come True (A Short Story)

I woke up with a start when I found myself in a very unfamiliar place. The bed I was lying on was grand—an English-quilting blanket and 2 soft pillows with flowery laces. The whole place was fit for a king! Suddenly the door opened and there stood my dream prince: Katsuya Kimura! I gasped in astonishment for he was actually a cartoon character. I did not know that he really exist. “Wake up, dear,” he said and pulled off the blanket and handed it to a woman who looked like the maid. “You will be late for work.” “Work?” I asked. “Yes! Work! Have you forgotten your own comic workhouse, baby dear?” Comic workhouse?! I…I have became a cartoonist? That was my wildest dreams! Being a cartoonist! I undressed and changed into my beige T-shirt and black trousers at once and hurriedly finished my breakfast. Katsuya drove me to the workhouse. My, my, was it big! I’ve never seen a bigger place than this! Katsuya kissed me and said, “See you at four, OK, baby?” I blushed scarlet. I always wan

Hans and Hilda

Once upon a time there was an old miller who had two children who were twins. The boy-twin was named Hans, and he was very greedy. The girl-twin was named Hilda, and she was very lazy. Hans and Hilda had no mother, because she died whilst giving birth to their third sibling, named Engel, who had been sent away to live wtih the gypsies. Hans and Hilda were never allowed out of the mill, even when the miller went away to the market. One day, Hans was especially greedy and Hilda was especially lazy, and the old miller wept with anger as he locked them in the cellar, to teach them to be good. "Let us try to escape and live with the gypsies," said Hans, and Hilda agreed. While they were looking for a way out, a Big Brown Rat came out from behind the log pile. "I will help you escape and show you the way to the gypsies' campl," said the Big Brown Rat, "if you bring me all your father's grain." So Hans and Hilda waited until their father let them out,

I Was A Lab Assistant of Sorts (Part 3)

Hey everyone. I know it's been a minute, but I figured I would bring you up to speed on everything that happened. So, needless to say, I got out, but the story of how it happened was wild. So there we were, me and the little potato dude, just waiting for the security dude to call us back when the little guy got chatty again. “Do you think he can get us out?” he asked, not seeming sure. “I mean, if anyone can get us out it would be him, right?” “What do you base this on?” I had to think about that for a minute before answering, “Well, he's security. It's their job to protect people, right? If anyone should be able to get us out, it should be them.” It was the little dude's turn to think, something he did by slowly breathing in and out as his body puffed up and then shrank again. “I will have to trust in your experience on this matter. The only thing I know about security is that they give people tickets
