A Second Chance
Charles stood outside the vast iron gates. The inside did not look at all welcoming. He was unsure what to do until a man approached him, dressed in a lavish suit.
"Name?" said the man.
"Charles Marley."
He began tapping on an iPad. “We’re expecting you. Please go in.”
"Where am I?" asked Charles. He looked again at the gates. It was pitch dark inside, but when he listened very closely, he could hear endless agonizing screams.
"Charles, you murdered thirteen children throughout your life. Don’t tell me you’re surprised that you ended up here."
"But how did I die?”
"I’ll look at your file."
The man turned back to his iPad. Finally, he looked up.
"Let me tell you something, Charles. There are precisely three artifacts on the planet that possess resurrection powers. People come to own these objects by pure luck, and most don’t even know because they look ordinary. That top hat in your attic that your grandfather left you? If someone on Earth were to put that on an acceptable vessel for your soul, you could be reincarnated.”
“How do I make that happen?”
“You can’t. You can only wait.”
Charles did wait, deep in the pits of Hell. Until one day, a young boy found the top hat at a thrift shop.
“This will be perfect for my snowman!” he exclaimed.
The boy ran home, gathered up his friends, and they stood in a circle as he placed the hat atop the snowman’s head. Their shrieks of joy were silenced when the snowman’s eyes suddenly seemed to twinkle with life, and his coal mouth twisted itself into a sick, disturbing grin.
