She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not

She loves me. She loves me not.

Have you ever played that game?

You use an ox-eye daisy and pluck off petals while alternating between “love” and “love not”. The phrase you say as you pluck off the last petal supposedly represents the truth between the object of your affection loving you or not.

I learned this game in high school, and played it every time I went out on a date with a girl. Every time, I always ended on “She loves me not”, and sure enough something would go wrong during the date or she would never call me to go out on another date.

During college, I became more and more obsessed with my little dating ritual. In an effort to change my luck, I tried using other objects: a bunch of grapes, a bag of M&Ms, or even the change I carried in my pocket. Still, I got the same lonely outcome: “She loves me not”

I just brought home a beautiful girl after taking her out for a nice stroll and a fancy dinner. Maybe my luck will change if I try something new….”She loves me”, I say as my pliers reach for the bound girl’s fingernails.
