3 Second Delay

My parents knew something was wrong after the first game of peekaboo. They took me to every pediatrician and specialist in the phone book. My reflexes were normal for a child my age and the MRI tests later in life had normal results.

No one could explain why I was seeing everything three seconds behind.

It was a struggle to live with but with help from a supportive family I managed. I’m considered legally blind so I can’t drive. I have to walk with a cane so I don’t bump into someone three seconds in front of me. I’m in the dark three seconds after I open my eyes. I watch the clock change a minute for 63 seconds. A burden to live with.

The one thing I can thank my delay for is saving me in the car crash that killed my best friend. I never saw the car about to T bone us until it already had. I remained relaxed and only sustained a broken arm.

I’m not so sure about today. I heard a loud boom followed by the screams of my neighbors above my flat. I could smell charring plastic and plaster above me.

But all I could see outside the apartment window was a plane flying oddly low.
